  • Mayfair Group LLC announced it has been awarded a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to conduct research and development (R&D) work to develop an advanced, artificial intelligence (AI) powered guidance system that will transform how litigated insurance claims are managed and resolved. By enhancing the decision-making process with automated, evidence-backed guidance, the system will significantly reduce the time and expense currently required to resolve claims, resulting in quicker payouts to claimants and decreasing the burden of legal costs. The system's innovative approach will assist in identifying critical case information, and supporting claim professionals in making more informed decisions. The project has the potential to improve the overall transparency and reliability of the claims litigation process, engendering greater trust in the insurance system.

R&D funding from the NSF accelerates the translation of results to develop an Intelligent Interactive Guidance System (IIGS) for litigated insurance claims using a novel approach for information extraction from massive unstructured data collections typical in insurance claims and summarization frameworks for presenting the extracted information, enabling a concise yet comprehensive view of complex claims data. The project aims to design a visualization interface that aids understanding and facilitates more informed decision-making. The research applies cutting-edge AI and machine learning techniques to these objectives, expanding past the boundaries of current capabilities in data analytics within the insurance industry.
“NSF accelerates the translation of emerging technologies into transformative new products and services,” said Erwin Gianchandani, NSF Assistant Director for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. “We take great pride in funding deep-technology startups and small businesses that will shape science and engineering results into meaningful solutions for today and tomorrow.” James Chapman, CEO and Co-Founder of Mayfair Group, said “We are excited to have the support of the National Science Foundation for our research and development work.” Describing the importance of the research, Chapman said “This is an essential step forward in serving the needs of both claimants and insurance companies. Our goal is to drive fairer, faster results in claims litigation that involves hundreds of billions of dollars each year.”

All proposals submitted to the NSF SBIR/STTR program, also known as America’s Seed Fund powered by NSF, undergo a rigorous merit-based review process. Once a small business is awarded a Phase I grant, it becomes eligible to apply for Phase II funding and additional supplements totaling up to $2 million. To get started, startups or entrepreneurs submit a written Project Pitch to see if their technology idea could be a good fit for the program. NSF has several programs that help accelerate the translation of research results to practice and provide pathways for researchers, start-ups, and aspiring entrepreneurs to move their ideas from the laboratory to the market and society. America’s Seed Fund is congressionally mandated through the Small Business Innovation Research program. The NSF is an independent federal agency with a budget of about $9.5 billion that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering.
